Updating the SMM Firmware

Before updating the SMM firmware, please read the following information carefully:

  • Replace certified SMM firmware only with another certified SMM firmware, see Safety Manual for FS3Safety Manual for FS2.
  • Changing the SMM firmware means changing the drive firmware, its ESI file and the WorkBench version. Only use a consistent firmware package. For information on compatibility see Safety Manual for FS3Safety Manual for FS2.
  • Only trained and qualified personnel shall update the SMM firmware.
  • Safety parameters will be removed and need to be re-validated.

To perform the update, you need the following:

  • Kollmorgen WorkBench with a safety project
  • update password
  • SMM firmware binary file
  • checksum of the new firmware (sometimes called the CRC in firmware release notes)

Follow these steps to update the SMM firmware on one or more drives:

  • Navigate to the Safety tab and select the drive(s) you want to update in the WorkBench view.
Note: Make sure the axes are disabled before you update the firmware.
  • Select the Update button.

  • The Safety Firmware Update view will appear. Select the drive(s) and fill in the required information: the update password, firmware checksum, and firmware file.
  • Make sure the current Firmware Version (FW Ver.) is correct.

  • Select the Update button.
Note: If the current SMM version and the targeted version are not compatible, a warning message will say that the safety parameters will be lost.
  • Ensure that the new firmware version is correct.
